Golden Round Trip, Switzerland, 11th October 2011

14:04
This is a record of one of the magnificent rail/boat journeys that are available in Switzerland. I did this trip with my wife in October 2011 and although there was snow on the top of Mount Pilatus, it was surprisingly warm. The trip can be done either way, but we decided to start in Lucerne. First there was a boat journey to Alpnachstad. Then we picked up the ride on the worlds steepest cog railway to the summit of Mount Pilatus. Then the descent on the other side of the mountain starts on the Aerial Cableway to Frakmuntegg. Then the Panoramic Gondola takes you further down the mountain to Kriens, where a short bus ride took us into the heart of Kriens. We then took a train to Hergiswil where we were staying. The day was fantastic. Thanks Philhill1955

Severn Valley Railway And Stanier Mogul Locomotive 2-6-0 42968

12:59
This is some sights and sounds on the Severn Valley Railway taken on 18th July 2011. It portrays some of the journey from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth as well as some movements of Ex LMS Stanier Mogul Locomotive, no. 42968 around both Kidderminster and Bridgenorth stations. This is the only remaining locomotive of 40 from the class which were introduced in 1933/1934. This locomotive is due its 10 year major overhaul sometime in 2012. By the way the driver really likes sounding the locos whistle! Anyway I hope you enjoy this short film.

Flying Scotsman at the North York Moors Railway 12th March 2016

17:34
This video is of the newly overhauled and painted Flying Scotsman, in LNER Apple Green Livery. The locomotive is on its visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The video was shot over the weekend of the 12th and 13th March 2016. The LNER Class A3 Pacific Locomotive 60103 Flying Scotsman was hauling passengers on Day 1 and Day 2 of a 9 day visit. There's just one comment I'd like to make, and that is that I would have preferred the NRM to use its 4472 number. Hope you enjoy. Apologies for the wobbly titles, this is caused by youtubes anti-shake application when steadying parts of my footage.

Andermatt To Oberalppass Train Journey, 12th Oct 2011

09:08
This journey shows the magnificent scenery between Andermatt and Oberalppass in Central Switzerland. The section is part of the famous "Glacier Express" route from Zermatt to St Moritz. The track is the narrower "metre" gauge which is common throughout Switzerland, and incorporates a cog system on the inclines to help with the traction on the way up, and braking on the way down. Although this metre gauge is used, the carriages are the same size as they would be on standard 4ft 81/2in tracks.

Steam Loco "Planet" Breaks Down

05:49
This video was filmed today, Saturday 13th March 2010 at around 2.45pm. Unfortunately it captures the Replica Steam Locomotive "No 9 Planet" developing a fault whilst operating rides for visitors to the Museum Of Science And Industry, (MOSI) in Manchester UK. She had been running without any problems up to that time. The problem I was told and can be seen in the film that a leak had developed. I am assuming from what I saw that the steam pressure could not be maintained and was draining from the system. This meant that the locomotive was only able to move a few yards at a time before the steam was fully exhausted from the system. Lets hope that this problem is not a serious one and that she will be in steam again very, very soon. I would be grateful if you would leave your comments about this video, whether they be good or bad. Thanks. philhill1955.

Ride Behind Steam Loco "Planet"

10:20
This short film is a record of the journey that can be made at The Museum Of Science & Industry, Manchester UK, behind a replica of George Stephensons steam locomotive Planet which was built in 1830 and was the locomotive used on the worlds first passenger railway line The Liverpool And Manchester Railway which opened in the same year. The journey only lasts about 8 minutes or so but is well worth the £1.00 fare! There are four stages to the short trip. Stage one starts at Liverpool Road East Station and ends at Ordsall Lane No 1 where the points are changed and the journey then continues with Planet pushing the two carriages along a second branch line. After arriving at the end of this branch Planet then pulls the carriages back to Ordsall Lane No1. The points are then changed and the train then heads back, with planet pushing the carriages to the starting point at Liverpool Road East station, where the journey ends. The journey is a little bumpy but really gives you the feel of what it was like all those years ago at the start of the railway era.

7827 Lydham Manor At The Paignton & Dartmouth Railway.

04:23
This is Great Western Railway 7800 Manor Class No. 7827 Lydham Manor, on duty at The Paignton & Dartmouth Railway today 1st July 2010. I think its worth a quick mention about her carrying a GWR Livery which she would never have carried in her mainline life, as she was built for BR in 1950, 2 years after the end of the GWR. But I think most people would agree that the GWR Livery is very striking and eye catching. Hope you enjoy this short film.

The Strathspey Steam Railway 13th October 2010.

17:54
This film is of a journey on the Strathspey Steam Railway on 13th October 2010. From its base at Aviemore through Boat of Garten and on to Broomhill, the railway takes you on a nostalgic 20 mile one and a half hour round trip along part of the original Highland Railway. As the train passes over Moorland, through woodlands and by great sweeps of the River Spey, the Cairngorm Mountains provide a backcloth to the scenery. It seems strange that although the journey is through the heart of the Highlands, the line itself is almost flat. The engine Class 812 0-6-0 number 828 was built in Glasgow in 1899 for the Caledonian Railway and is the last remaining example of her class. She has recently undergone a major overhaul being finished around June 2010, and is turned out beautifully in original Caledonian Blue livery.

2 Steam Tours at Chester 25th Nov 2017

09:23
2 Steam Tours at Chester 25th November 2017 This video was shot at Chester Railway station on the 25th November 2017. It shows two Christmas excursions to Chester. The first one to arrive was “The Chester Christmas Cracker” from London Euston hauled by LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 “Tornado” The second one was “The Christmas Cheshireman” hauled by British Railways Britannia Class 4-6-2 No. 70013 “Oliver Cromwell” In the film is shown some of the movements around the station, and near the end a rare sight on Britain’s Rail Network. That is, two steam locomotives shown together. By the way, apologies for the jittery reproduction of the video between 8' 10" and 8' 51" That is the way it uploaded to Youtube, my original is fine. Anyway I hope you enjoy.

Flying Scotsman back on the rails at the East Lancs Railway 9th Jan 2016

14:01
Flying Scotsman Back On the Rails at the East Lancashire Railway 9th January 2016. This video was taken at the East Lancashire Railway where the iconic LNER Class A3 Pacific Steam Locomotive, “Flying Scotsman” was back on the rails and under its own steam for the first time in nearly a decade. The engine was running these passenger services in her undercoat paint and without her nameplate. This weekend was essentially a trial run out for her before being fully repainted and back on the national network as well as on Heritage railways from February and March this year. The engine, although it had worked flawlessly the day before on its trial runs on the railway without carriages coupled, developed a slight problem with its braking system on this, its first day hauling passenger services again. The problem was only minor but the railway coupled a diesel locomotive, and later in the day another steam locomotive 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier, behind the “Scotsman” as a safety precaution. I’ve included a clip of 34092 City of Wells at 2 minutes and 07 seconds, because it was billowing steam everywhere, and that’s what Heritage Railways are all about Hope you enjoy my video.

34081 Welcomes visitors to Grosmont 29th Sept 2018

03:11
"34081 92 Squadron." *In September 1948, 34081 became the 101st Bullied Pacific to be completed. In 1950 she was named after the the famous Spitfire Squadron based at Biggin Hill, Kent during the Battle of Britain. 34081 and 42 members of her class were dedicated to RAF airfields, squadrons or personnel.* Turn the volume up on this one. This was 34081 leaving Grosmont for Pickering on Saturday 29th September 2018. She catches everyones attention even more by this wonderful display of steam, smoke and wheelspins. It was as if she was welcoming visitors spectacularly to the North York Moors Railway Annual Steam Gala. I hope you enjoy this short video. * Excerpt from NYMR official program guide* Thanks philhill1955

Great Central Railway Rail & Mail Event 24th July 2010. (Part 1)

13:56
This is my video of the Great Central Railway's Rail & Mail Event on 24th July 2010. It featured Deltic Locomotive D9009 Alycidon as the main star of the day. Also fully restored Royal Mail Travelling Post Office Carriages were making an appearance for the first time. There are 2 or 3 shots of them being hauled on the day by various locomotives. But one scene which you may find interesting is a demonstration of a mail pickup and drop off run. If you keep an eye for the footage at around 9 minutes 12 seconds, you will catch 4953 Pitchford Hall making it. There will be a part 2 soon which has got some footage at the end of the day when some of the locos were being prepared for the following day and being put to bed. Hope you enjoy.

Tornado at Chester on the Cathedrals Express, Sat 11/12/2010

06:16
This is filmed in High Definition, so if you can watch it in HD it should be better. This short film features Peppercorn A1 locomotive Number 60163 Tornado, at Chester on the 11th December 2010. She was hauling The Cathedrals Express Service from London Euston. You will be able to see her manoeuvering around the station to end up facing the right way for the return journey. There is some footage of Tornado leaving Chester in the dark. It is quite interesting to see in the film masses of steam being expelled a couple times. Any comments and responses would be greatly appreciated Hope you enjoy.

CVR-Cauldon Lowe Steam Event 25th Feb 2012

12:24
This film is from The Churnet Valleys Cauldon Lowe Steam Weekend on 25th Feb 2012. It shows some footage of the newly opened section from Cheddleton to Cauldon Lowe. This was the first day that the engine was able to run around at Cauldon Lowe ready for the return journey. Prior to this the train had to be topped and tailed. The loop had just been certified by the appropriate authority. Unfortunately there were only 2 engines running, and not 5 as previously advertised. Originally there was supposed to be Black 5 double headed, and banking engines on the Cauldon Lowe runs. The two engines operating on 25th were Large Prairie Side Tank 2-6-2 number 5199 and Black 5 4-6-0 number 45379. One of the locomotives not fit for running on the day was Black 5 number 44767 "George Stephenson." Anyway I had a good day. Hope you enjoy my selection. Thanks for looking. Philhill1955

Flying Scotsman wheelspin at the East Lancs Railway 9th Jan 2016

00:46
This was the first day that the Flying Scotsman had hauled passenger services in about a decade. The weather was awful but the crowds still turned out to see this legend of British engineering. I had a great day there but reluctantly must make one criticism. The engine, although it had worked flawlessly the day before on its trial runs on the railway, developed a slight problem with its braking system on this, its first day hauling passenger services again. The problem was only minor but the railway coupled a diesel locomotive behind the “Scotsman” as a safety precaution. While I agree that this was the sensible action to take, I feel I have to criticize the decision to “double head” the “Scotsman” with a diesel instead of with another steam locomotive, as they did later in the day on the “Scotsmans” last run. A modern diesel locomotive behind a legend such as the “Flying Scotsman” on its first day back hauling passenger services, somehow didn’t work for me.

Here is a short film of my visit to the LLangollen Railway on a very, very wet Saturday afternoon 21st November 2009. As you will see from the footage the rain seeped behind the skylight filter of my camcorder. Anyway I had a great time, regardless of that. I would like to thank Gareth Evans of the LLangollen Diesel Group for taking the time out to show me around the shed and yard, also climbing into the cab of the Class 26 loco D5310. Thank you Gareth. Anyway I hope you all enjoy the soggy footage. Thanks for watching. Phil.

Duchess Of Sutherland Overhaul 20th Nov 2011

02:05
This recent footage shows the latest stage in the heavy general overhaul of LMS Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 Pacific, 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland". As you will see she has come a long way and is starting to look like a steam locomotive again. If you look at the tender you will see that one side has had a coat of Green undercoat paint, and the back and other side has been done in the final Green colour which will be her new livery colour instead of the LMS maroon that we have all been used to seeing in the past. Unfortunately because of the orange lights in the workshop, the new green livery cannot be appreciated properly. In case anybody is interested just click on the link below to go the Duchesses overhaul web page on the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trusts website, so if anyone is interested you can check it out for more information. If the link doesn't work, just copy and paste it into the address bar of your browser http://www.prclt.co.uk/New_6233_Overhaul.htm Hope you enjoy the video.

Apologies for the way this film, as well as part 1 is jumping quite often, I uploaded the footage via a public wireless network which had poor signal strength and which kept disappearing on me. The original file is fine so when I get back home I will upload the 2 files again and hopefully they will play ok. This is Part 2 of my visit to the Didcot Railway Centre. The GWR 175 events all this week are commemorating the 175 years since the Great Western Railway was first opened in 1835. There is footage of locos from all three running lines on the site including broad gauge loco Firefly as well as run pasts and the Coaling Station in action Heres hoping you enjoy the sights and sounds of a bygone era.

Steam Heaven (Part 1) At Didcot Saturday 1st May 2010.

Apologies for the way this film, as well as part 2 is jumping quite often and also flickering badly in places. I uploaded the footage via a public wireless network which had poor signal strength and which kept disappearing on me. The original file is fine so when I get back home I will upload the 2 files again and hopefully they will play ok. This footage was recorded today Saturday 1st May 2010, at Didcot Railway Centre, where the steam event was being held as a continuation of the GWR 175 Celebrations, which is celebrating 175 years since the first section of the Great Western Railway was opened in 1835. The film includes the locomotive 3717 City Of Truro which in 1904 was reputedly the first steam locomotive in the world to travel at a speed in excess of 100mph! The number of other steam locos present at this event is too many to list, so hopefully you will just enjoy the sights and sounds of the event. As you will see, the weather was awful as it was raining heavily, and the light was pretty poor.

GCR Golden Oldies Steam Gala 28th May 2011 Part 2.

Here is some footage of the recent Great Central Railway Golden Oldies Steam Gala from 28th May 2011. The theme was steam locomotives from every generation of steam power. Steaming on the day were locos from 1829 to the late 20th Century. The star of the show in my opinion was the replica 'Rocket', from 1829, closely followed by the replica 'Planet', from 1830. Other locos steaming on the day were 'No 20' originally built in 1863 for the Furness Railway, 'Bellerophon' was also in service, built in 1874. '32662 Martello', built in 1875 was also at the event.

Visiting A4 Pacific Loco No 60019 Bittern was the star of the weekend. There is also some footage of the turntable in use, and it shows the difficulty the staff had turning the locomotive No. 45407. If you look closely you may see that one wheel on the turntable at the end where the front of the locomotive is, is not turning and probably is causing tremendous drag. No wonder the guys had so much trouble. (The movie you are seeing was dramatically edited.) Part 2 will follow shortly, and will show some of the activity at Grosmont and some views of the shed. Duchess of Sutherland Overhaul Jan 2011

01:03
This is a short film taken at the workshops of "The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust." located at the "West Shed" Swanwick Junction, which is part of "The Midland Railway" site in Derbyshire. It shows "LMS Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 Pacific No. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland" well and truly stripped down during her major overhaul. The boiler is not present as it was removed from the frames on 15th December 2010 ready for its journey by low loader to the LNWR boiler shops in Crewe, the boiler arrived at its destination on 18th January 2011. The 14th January 2011 saw the frames being lifted on the Matteson jacks and the leading bogie, pony truck and driving wheelsets removed. In the film you will see these parts on track one of the workshop. Track two shows the frames and track three has the tender. The cab of the duchess is stored in another part of the workshop, as seen in the film. For any one that is interested I have included a link to go straight to the overhaul page of the PRCLT website. Unfortunately YouTube have messed with the audio from 4 min 35 sec to 8 min 02 sec. So film doesn't work properly between those times. I believe that the full display is worth watching, but if you don't want to watch the full film, may I suggest having a look between the following times, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. 5 min 30 to 8 min 05 14 min 40 to 15 min 45 18 min 15 to 20 min 30 22 min 10 to End This video is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles album "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on 1st June 1967. And to mark this special anniversary, Liverpool has commissioned 13 never-before-seen events, influenced by each track on the album, between the dates 25th May – 16th June 2017. This firework display being one of the 13. The display was at Camphill in Woolton, Liverpool, and the film takes in the full display which lasted about 25 minutes. Hope you enjoy. GCR Golden Oldies Steam Gala 28th May 2011 Part 1.

08:47

Great Central Railway Steam Enthusiasts Event 19th Nov 2011

08:51
The staff at last weekend's steam enthusiast's event at The Great Central Railway had all kinds of problems with 2 of the 3 steam locomotives that were supposed to be in service that day. When I arrived on Saturday 19th November at about 11am there was only the little tank engine no. 47406 operating. 4953 Pitchford Hall and the 8F no. 8624 were both having problems. As you will see for the first couple of minutes of my film 8624 had been "tinkered" with and was running up and down the line on test before becoming operational. She finally started hauling passengers at around 2.30pm. 4953 Pitchford Hall was relegated quite early to the sidings. Thank goodness for the little 3F Tank 47406, who kept the service running as well as she could under the circumstances. In fairness the DMU was called upon to carry passengers until 8624 was declared fit for service. While this was disappointing, I'm sure most people still had a good time on what was a bitterly cold day. There is a little piece at the end showing the new turntable, which has been installed at Quorn & Woodhouse but again unfortunately the demonstration of this as well as the TPO demonstration had to be cancelled. Any way I hope you enjoy this collection.

NRM York To NRM Shildon Shuttle Trains And Steam Events, 24th September 2011.

16:46
This extravaganza took place on the weekend Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September 2011. There were two return shuttle trips arranged on each day to travel between York NRM and Shildon NRM. Also on each day there were special steam events at both venues. This film is Part One which shows the first shuttle of the day leaving York for Shildon. Then there is footage of the locomotives that hauled the shuttle, as a top and tailed service. They were GWR steam locomotive no. 5972 "Olton Hall", a 4-6-0 Hall class locomotive and LMS Stanier Class 5, 4-6-0 number 45305. The first locomotive is the famous "Hogwarts Castle" locomotive used in the Harry Potter films, and which it was specially re-painted and re-named for the films. Its original colour would have been GWR Brunswick Green. Next I show scenes from the displays around the yard and within the exhibition hall building. There were also shuttles running on the demonstration line hauled firstly by 0-6-0 Saddletank Locomotive Sir Berkeley, built in 1890 and later in the day Great Western Railway locomotive 0-6-2T Number 5643 built in 1925. During the film you will also see the view from the train on the demonstration line as well as 5972 and 45305 heading back to York. Finally at the end of the film can be seen the original "Sans Pareil" locomotive, built by Timothy Hackworth in 1829 for the Rainhill Trials. I hope you enjoy this film and thanks for reading this. Part 2 will follow shortly philhill1955
