How to Harvest broccoli to get more from your plants Hi Folks. Broccoli would have to be one of my favourite plants to grow.. It starts off with a nice tidy little head of green goodness only to go onto providing you with countless meals of side shoots for months to come. Check out this clip for growing & harvest tips, ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFqdI94_WGQ We were concerned that we didn't plant enough broccoli for the season but we have started to be flooded with side shoots from a few of the plants.. We now have the second crop starting to produce as well so I think we will be sorted for broccoli until the start of Summer now at this rate :) Also posted the recipe for the salad on our blog if you are interested, ► https://bitsouttheback.com/growing-broccoli/ Hope you enjoy this quick update & your gardens are booming. How to Grow & Plant Sweet Potato Slips in Containers & Beds

How to Grow & Plant Sweet Potato Slips in Containers & Beds Hi folks. Here's a look at how easy it is to grow your own Sweet Potato slips then plant them out into a container or a prepared garden bed. I've included a look at a few different ways to grow slips from "seed" potatoes to help you out. Have planted these into a Root Pouch & will be growing the vines up a trellis. Hopefully they will grow well enough through our cool season that we'll get a few small harvests of greens. If you live in Australia & would like to purchase a few Root Pouches you can purchase them from myself. More information & ordering details can be found here. http://www.bitsouttheback.net/p/growing-with-root-pouches.html Below is a link to Gardenate's climate selection page. Just select your climatic zone & it will give you a rough idea when particular varieties are ready to be sown/planted out in your area. http://www.gardenate.com/zones/ Many thanks to Penny Mitchell from Share the Seed Australia for letting me use her picture of a sweet potato in a glass. 👍 Cheers Penny. 😊 Subscribing to us here at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below, http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back various social media where we post mini updates on the aquaponics, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits daily. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback http://bitsouttheback.tumblr.com/ http://instagram.com/bits_out_the_back @bits_out_the_back https://www.pinterest.com/bitsouttheback/ https://twitter.com/RobsUrbanFarm @RobsUrbanFarm Have a great one everyone. Aquaponic radial flow filter for solids removal..

08:13
Aquaponic radial flow filter for solids removal.. I decided that I would try this style of filter after seeing one like it on an Earthan group clip.. It will also come on handy when the extra tanks are added.. Took a bit of playing with the pumps to get it flowing well but other than that it was a quick & easy build.. Would like to thank Paul from Earthan group for dropping off the Uniseals & for giving me loads of pointers over a coffee or 4.. The whole purpose of the filter is to slow the velocity of the water so the solids can precipitate out and be removed from the system.. For this to happen the water must slow its flow long enough inside the filter for the solids to settle out, this is called the retention time.. I have read in a few places that anything over 60 seconds retention time is acceptable for larger solids, with 2 min being the desirable amount of time for filters like ours.. The formula I use to see how long the water is retained in the filter before moving on is: Size of filter (in litres) / flow rate (in litres per hour) = Retention time in hours. (Same can be done in gallons & gallons per hour) For our system the equation looks like this.. 50 / 2700 = 0.0185 of an hour or 1minute 7seconds To help you out here is a handy Decimal to Time Calculator http://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/time/decimal-to-time-calculator.php Hope that info helps some out there interested in setting up a solids capturing RFF.. PLEASE NOTE.. This clip was shot when I was worried about high nitrate levels & I thought it might be best to remove some of the load from the system. I am now not concerned about nitrite levels since learning more from some very experienced AP amateurs & professionals. When I first started out planing this system I read that one this size didn't need a solids filter. I have found out the hard way that this is not always true & solids can build up in the grow beds causing toxic levels of nitrite to be released into the system if the grow bed system is poorly designed & left un checked. Idea for this came from Earthan Group's DIY Solids Filter post which has been removed unfortunately, sorry folks. Self watering Wicking bed, IBC beds with a few modifications..

12:57
Self watering Wicking bed, IBC beds with a few modifications Hi folks. This clip shows a few modifications I've been making to the IBC wicking beds when constructing them. The extra water holding capacity reduces the frequency of watering needed during the warmer months making them a bit more time efficient as well. You can check out our latest Wicking bed build here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL7PgoTlImE I would just like to thank Colin Austin for sharing his wicking bed idea freely with the world. It is great to see all the ways people have used this idea to come up with their own versions. I am a huge fan of wicking beds with the majority of the plants grown here coming from a wicking bed or wicking Root Pouch gardens. They help to conserve water & save you a lot of time watering. Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming. How to Save Basil Seeds

03:35
Saving basil seeds for your next harvest is a very easy process.. It is an easy task & the seeds also make great gifts for friends, family & strangers alike.. The main problem we have is the over active bees that like to cross pollinate the 4 different varieties giving us a varied mix of basil to choose from when it come to preparing meals.. The varieties we have are Sweet basil - Ocimum basilicum Opal basil - Ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens' Thai basil - Ocimum basilicum 'horapha' Perennial/sacred/holy basil - ocimum basilicum americanum Subscribing to us at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back on Facebook, Instagram & G+ where we post mini updates on the aquaponics/aquaculture, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits.. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback & on Instagram at bits_out_the_back Have a great one everyone...

WHAT IS AQUAPONICS, the Bare Bones Basics..

06:43
WHAT IS AQUAPONICS, the Bare Bones Basics Thought I would do a layman's explanation of what aquaponics is for those that are curious.. Thanks to Edwina for asking the question :) Not a real in depth one but it will give those an idea on how the system works & the relationship between the fish, bacteria & plants.. I have mentioned it in previous clips but not where it is easily found in one spot.. Most of the information I found for helping me to understand aquaponics was first found on You Tube as well a few of the aquaponic forums & sites on the internet.. This link will take you to a FREE download full of links to useful clips, downloads & a few suppliers. ► https://bitsouttheback.com/free-aquaponic-information/ I have had some excellent help along the way from fellow backyard growers on forums as well as from some very knowledgeable professionals who like to help out when they can.. To all these people I would like to say a big THANKS.. They have helped me sort out a few of my newbie mistakes on more than one occasion & can take some of the credit for us not losing any fish :D **knocks on wood** Hope you enjoyed the clip & your systems are booming. How we make comfrey green manure tea/organic fertiliser..

08:37
Decided to have a crack at making up some comfrey tea fertiliser again after seeing a few posts on different gardening group pages on Facebook lately.. We used to do this a lot years ago when we were renting using weed plants, pruning from veggie plants, comfrey leaves & chicken manure as well.. Decided to start making up the straight comfrey tea fertiliser as I think it will be a big benefit to the fruiting plants in the straw bale beds out the front.. Be warned though, this brew can get very pongy depending on what you add.. How to Hand Pollinate Zucchini, Squash & Pumpkins to Increase your Yields

05:46
Hand pollinating zucchini, squash, pumpkin & other cucurbits is an easy task that helps to ensure you get a bumper crop. It's a skill that definitely comes in handy when your garden isn't visited by many bees or other pollination insects. Involving the kids in the pollination process is a great way to give them some ownership in growing the food they'll be eating. Might even help to encourage some fussy eaters to enjoy a veggie they have watched grow from a flower to a fruit but I can't make any promises ;-) Subscribing to us at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back various social media where we post mini updates on the aquaponics, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback http://bitsouttheback.tumblr.com/ http://instagram.com/bits_out_the_back @bits_out_the_back https://www.pinterest.com/bitsouttheback/ https://twitter.com/RobsUrbanFarm @RobsUrbanFarm Have a great one everyone.
How to save Zucchini / courgette seeds.. Also works for squash & pumpkins..

05:26
Have left this zucchini/courgette on the vine for seed saving purposes & decided it was time to harvest the fruit and save the seeds after a viewer prompted me, thanks Voca T :) It is a really easy process that only takes a matter of minutes to do & requires no special tools.. Aquaponic & hydroponic seedlings, planting them out the easy way..

03:46
Here's a bit of a look at an easy way to plant out your seedlings in clay media for aquaponics & hydroponics.. Can be rather frustrating trying to dig a hole to plant out a seeding only to have it fill back in or to bury other seedlings under a pile of clay.. Would work just as well with pea gravel & perlite I would think.. How to Build a Radial Flow Solids Filter for Aquaponic Systems

After a false start the other week I finally have a new Radial Flow Filter with 50mm/2" piping installed into the aquaponics system.. Air pruning barrel update, we have fruit.. January 2014

04:10
Was asked how the air pruning wicking barrel was going by someone interested in having a crack at one, so here's a bit of look. It's only 8 weeks since the papaya was transplanted into the air pruning wicking barrel & so far there has been no problems at all with the barrel or with the way the plant is growing. Am most pleased that there is a fruit already putting on some nice growth.. Still want to make a few more for the dwarf lemon & other fruit trees. How to Grow Turmeric Hi Folks. I've had a lot of people ask how we grow our turmeric & others wanting pointers for growing in cooler climates, so thought it was time to post a clip. 👍 Would definitely encourage you to plant some turmeric if you're in a warm enough climate & you love using this tasty spice. It's a very easy plant to grow & with a bit of care it can be grown in cooler climates too. बढ़ रही है हल्दी Subscribing to us here at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below, http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back various social media where we post mini updates on the aquaponics, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits daily. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback http://bitsouttheback.tumblr.com/ http://instagram.com/bits_out_the_back @bits_out_the_back https://www.pinterest.com/bitsouttheback/ https://twitter.com/RobsUrbanFarm @RobsUrbanFarm Have a great one everyone. No Dig garden bed for Potatoes..

07:18
No Dig garden beds are a great way to grow potatoes. We were very chuffed with the previous no dig bed used to grow out some spuds in so decided to have another go & thought I would show you how we have been making them up.. Compost would make a great alternative to worm castings & would also help to attract worms into the bed itself I think.. I have also made up a No Dig potato barrel & posted a bit of a how to in the latest Simple Savings blog for those interested http://goo.gl/Q2plOR Next on the cards for us here will be a No Dig wicking bed & hope to make a start on that soon.. The below sites might be of interest for those looking at having a crack at making up a No Dig bed for themselves.. http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s867068.htm http://www.hunterorganicgrowerssociety.org.au/articles/gardening/no-dig-gardening/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No-dig_gardening Subscribing to us at Bits Out the Back is as easy as clicking below http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bnbob01 You can also find Bits Out the Back on Facebook, Instagram & G+ where we post mini updates on the aquaponics/aquaculture, chooks, worms, wicking bed gardens & other small tidbits.. www.facebook.com/Bitsouttheback www.instagram.com/bits_out_the_back http://plus.google.com/u/0/+RobBob/posts Have a great one everyone...
Self watering container / Wicking barrel, with added ideas & pointers ;)

17:35
Have been growing in wicking beds/barrels for about 4 years & have been most impressed with the small amount of water they use as well as their ability to pump out the veggies.. Thought it was time to post an updated clip showing a few improvements & additions that have been made over the past few years to the wicking barrel design.. The one thing I have left out of this clip & hope to cover in another is the use of compost worms & the benefits they bring to a wicking system like this.. This clip is long enough methinks ;) Harvest clip for the sweet potatoes planted in this barrel, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4UATTnvy18 Below are some clips & links that you might find useful if you are interested in having a go at making up your own wicking barrel, garden bed or container.. Coffee grounds to lower soil pH for Blueberries, Fact or fiction..

07:41
Have seen on the web & been told by a few folks that you can dramatically lower the pH of your soil with used coffee grounds for acid loving plants like blueberries.. While blueberries do best in soil between 4 & 6 on the pH scale, unfortunately used coffee grounds just doesn't lower it that far.. Flowers of sulphur is a much more suitable amendment to add to the soil to help lower the pH & is a naturally occurring element.. Following the directions on the pack will help guide you as to the best dose & method to use to achieve the pH level for your soil type.. Do Pine Needles Make Soil More Acidic? How much do I use, etc.... The Michigan State University Extension office has free pdf literature on the matter. Just google University Extension and using sulfur for blueberries and Michigan's literature comes up first. How to Build an Aquaponic System - Chop & Flip IBC Build

27:00
Hi Folks. Have been asked MANY times over the past few years if I could post a clip on building a basic aquaponic system & have finally found the time to knock one together. This is a basic aquaponic system made from a recycled IBC tank that would take the average handyman a day to build & set up. The beauty of this Chop & Flip system is that it can be added to over time, after you've gotten the bug & want to grow more tasty fish & veggies in your own backyard. The cost for this build was just under AUD $240 for the tank, pump & all the required plumbing which was bought from retail stores. It would work out a fair bit cheaper if bought from wholesalers & online stores. The clay cost an extra AUD $150 but rock & other media would be a lot cheaper. Horse manure is a great addition the garden beds as it adds organic matter & food for the worms in there.. It is also use as the main bedding for all our compost worm farms.. Sometimes it can be hard to break the pellets down by hand through a screen/sieve after they have been baking in the sun for a while.. Here's a look at 2 easy ways to break the hard pellets down that only take a few seconds :) Would also work well for cowpats as well I think.. Solids Lifting Outlet (SLO) for Aquaponic / Aquaculture Fish Tanks Explained

07:47
Solids lifting outlets are used by many people to remove the fish solids from the base of fish tanks. They are very easy to build using simple off the shelf parts from the plumbing aisle of most hardware stores. Aquaponic plumbing, How the water flows through our IBC system.

05:19
Just a quick look at how the water flows from the fish tank to the radial flow filter & then onto the grow beds.. This is a basic "Constant height In Fish Tank, Pump In Sump Tank" or CHIFT PIST & is also known as the more concise "Constant Height, One Pump" or CHOP by others.. Is a very basic system that can be configured in many different ways & is easily built with recycled materials.. Air Pruning Self watering/Wicking barrel, a DIY project for papaya/pawpaw..

11:58
I have been impressed with what I have read & seen online in regards to air pruning systems so have decided to look into it further.. I've spoken to a few people that have used these air pruning tubs for bushes/trees & decided I would give them a go for our dwarf fruit trees.. The first is a DIY barrel for our dwarf Paw Paw/Papaya & also have another planned for a dwarf lemon tree.. UPDATE.... I have been so impressd with how air pruning has worked with the barrel that I have decided to sell "Root Pouches" through our small online store, http://www.bitsouttheback.net/p/bits-out-back-store.html#.U9bi2fmSyVU I was also very lucky to get a few fabric grow bags sent to me from a great Tuber called Dale, AKA Mediamaker2000 http://www.youtube.com/user/mediamaker2000 I hope to have these pots set up very soon in a small area under the back stairs & will be using them in conjunction with a Wetpot irrigation system to grow some summer veggie crops.. I think they will do really well after seeing how well the DIY air pruning shopping bag is going.. Molasses based fertiliser using seaweed emulsion or worm "juice"/castings tea..

We have seen some great growth lately after applying molasses based liquid fertilisers so thought I would share how we have been mixing it up.. Will be moving onto a worn "juice"/wee & worm casting tea once the seaweed emulsion runs out.. JUST A QUICK NOTE.. Blackstrap is the molasses that is left after the 3rd boiling of the syrup.. It can be sulphured or unsulphured depending on how the cane was processed.. Please look into the pros & cons of sulphured & unsulphured before trying it on your garden.. How we feed our compost worms, worm slushies anyone ?

08:46
Time for an updated clip on how we feed the worms.. The way we make the "slushies" has changed a little from the first clips we posted a few years ago.. We have started to dry & grind egg shells before adding them now after reading a few posts & links posted on "Vermicomposting - Worm Farming" page on FaceBook.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/wormfarm/ This batch was totally consumed by the worms in under 48 hours.. This method makes the food a lot easier for the microbes & worms to feed on so is well worth the small amount of effort needed to make it up I think.. How to build a bathtub worm farm from recycled materials...

Made up this very cheap Bathtub Worm Farm out of recycled items & a bathtub we sourced originally from freecycle.org.. It will let us consolidate all the different worm farms we have into 1 large one.. Has made the feeding of the worms a lot easier & has produced loads of terrific castings for us.. How to Make an Automatic Chicken Waterer with Nipple Drippers

09:22
How to Make an Automatic Chicken Waterer with Nipple Drippers Made up a chicken waterer for the girls cage over the past few days. This one is 25L/6½ gal in size & should last the 4 of them for at least a week if not longer I think. A closed in waterer like this will also help to keep the water cleaner. It was a constant battle with the girls scratching dirt into their old feeder making it necessary to clean it every second day. This waterer definitely took some of the "AWWW DAAAD" out of the daily chicken choirs. BUY WATER NIPPLES IN TH USA HERE https://www.amazon.com/shop/bnbob01 The drill I used was an 8.5mm. 8.8mm or 11/32 are the suggested sizes for the tap size.. The tap used was a 1/8th BSP **UPDATE** This system has now been modified to include another watering station & has been connected to a large reservoir.. A bit of a look at the set up now can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbvq7EEwUzo Hope you enjoy this quick DIY & your Chooks are doing well.
