Most of us believe ghost ships to be the stuff of a Scooby Doo writer’s room but throughout history, many claim to have witnessed ships long after they’ve fallen victim to the elements or mysteriously vanished. Get your Scooby snacks microwaved because today on ApexTV, we explore the drifting graveyards of doomed vessels.
The SS Valencia
In 1906, the SS Valencia went under off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia after taking a battering from bad weather conditions near Cape Mendocino. The use of lifeboats helped to save 37 people but the water claimed 71 lives and one person completely vanished all together. Decades after this fatal incident, many fisherman have told tales of ghost ship sightings, claiming to have witnessed this ship with human skeletons on-board.
In 1775, a whaling ship called The Herald discovered This could indicate that the Octavius had been out at sea unmanned by living humans for 13 years. It’s theorized that the ship completed its journey to the Atlantic while heading back to England from the Orient via the Northwest Passage with no crew.
The Flying Dutchman
This ghost ship has a legacy like no other, inspiring countless paintings, films and books. On a voyage to the East Indies, Captain Van der Decken attempted to steer this eerie ship through the ruthless weather conditions of the Cape of Good Hope. Upon failing miserably, legend claims that since the captain’s attempt to save his men, the ship and its crew have been cursed to eternally explore the oceans. To this day, hundreds of sailors and fishermen claim to have witnessed this vessel as it carries out its never ending exploration of the seas.
The Mary Celeste
After being stumbled upon in the Atlantic Ocean in 1872, The Mary Celeste still had its sails up, the crew’s belongings on-board and a cargo hold with 1500 barrels of alcohol completely untouched. The lifeboat, the crew and the captain’s logbook were the only things absent. However, the most likely explanation is that the crew fled due to brutal weather conditions and later met their demise having attempted to battle the elements in a lifeboat. The story of Mary Celeste has encouraged much speculation. Conspiracists have attached theories involving sea monsters, ghosts and even alien abduction to this ominous tale.
The Ourang Medan
Whilst voyaging through the Strait of Malacca in 1947, two US ships strayed from course on a rescue mission after receiving a distress call from The Ourang Medan. The ship caught fire and exploded before further investigation could be carried out. The theorized reason for why is the illegal nitroglycerin the ship was carrying. Like The Mary Celeste, conspiracists claim paranormal activities or alien invasion could have been the cause of the crew’s demise.
