After this incident, the aircraft was given it's nickname as the "Azores Glider." It now has a cult following of people seeking to photograph it.

What is it Canadians and fuel starvation? First the Gilmi Glider and then this.

Elaine Blackhurst (13 days ago)
What this film does not say the Pilot was an experienced glider pilot his skills brought that plane down. It landed travelling at 200 miles an hour I read years ago and every tyre blew out. Had there been any fuel on the plane they would all have died in a huge fireball.the pilot was awarded one of the highest aviation awards ever given. To those who criticise imagine brining a massive plane in with no functions you only get one chance to get it right and he did. To me and millions of other people he is a hero
lizard944 (1 day ago)
I don't understand your logic about the "huge fireball." There was no structural damage upon landing other than the tires. Drama queen much? LOL!

The investigators were shocked to learn that the First Officer was not peddling hard enough nor fast enough to maintain proper trim on the rear horizontal thrasher flip-flaps, resulting in a first class passenger spilling some of his martini. He countered the accusation saying "I was too busy trying to land the plane to worry about that." The investigative committee didn't buy that excuse for a moment, charging him $27.37 in martini and Laundry fees. Plus a fine of $100 citing the "because we can" rule as justification. To date he has paid a button, a dirt encrusted life-saver, and some pocket lint towards the debt.

So modern airplanes aren't equipped with exterior lamps that can illuminate the wings & behind to allow the crew to see a fuel leak?

Good video. I am afraid of flying and obviously this is not helping. But for some zany reason I like the videos.
youarelovedSOmuch (15 days ago)
+Pamela Perry Yes, you're welcome Pamela. Flying in a commercial jet is by far the safest mode of travel currently in existence. Look at Southwest Airlines for example, one of the biggest airlines in the United States. They've been around for over 50 years, with thousands of flights each week. In total, there have been 3 deaths, and never a single single crash (runway overruns do not count). Let's compare that with car accidents. Every day in the United States there are about 15,000 car accidents, resulting in about 550 deaths EVERY DAY.
Pamela Perry (24 days ago)
ty for your comments. I have flown but was afraid of it then. I had no idea that many planes were in the air.
youarelovedSOmuch (24 days ago)
Every 3 seconds, a Boeing 737 lands or takes off. And that is just one model of plane. I like these videos too, but I do not feel unsafe when flying on a commercial aircraft. These incidents are very much a minority occurrence.

https://youtu.be/1FqR_FafJqg?t=704 Skilled pilots are so important. As it is in many other situations throughout human being's actions! You do the same all the time in order to turn the situation but without seeing any effect... We all can learn from it for our lifes! If we want a change-effect we have to evaluate our actions. No change of action - no change of effect... it seems so simple - but obviously people often are stuck.

I’m from Montreal, Canada, where Air Transat was created and I had seen M. Robert Piché and he dedicated his book to me about this adventure. It was a true honour seeing him in person and seeing his last flight just before his retirement was absolutely amazing.

doesn't make sense if they have no reverse thrust to stop the plane
lizard944 (1 day ago)
Flaps at full, spoilers deployed and use wheel brakes. You don't really need reversers if you have a long enough runway and stick it on the threshold.
Farra Elena (1 month ago)
This is one my favourites. I love watching the ending part when the plane was gliding 360 towards the airport with no background music.

Why is it that they were able to glide so far & so long but other planes that lose engines go down immediately or shortly after?! Is it type of aircraft, what altitude I'm sure plays a part as well? I don't know, just curious!
Farra Elena (3 months ago)
Wow.. that was seriously a scary one. First, fuel was leaking on the right and then the situation got worse by transferring some of the fuel from the left to the right. And then the right engine went out, followed by the left. Geezz... can't imagine being on that plane crusin' with all engines out 😟
Lord Trump (3 months ago)
FO: So we lost half the fuel (due to a leak in right engine). Captain: Lets balance out the plane and fix the problem. FO: How ? Captain: Lets lose the other half too
Hugo Lindum (3 months ago)
Why did the pilots not identify the lower than usual fuel much earlier?
Glenn Rishton (3 months ago)
What struck me is the lead mechanic having misgivings about the part to be installed but was overruled by someone riding a nice desk.
Grumpy Hermit (3 months ago)
There's a lot more to this story and it was a lot closer to disaster that it seems....like they couldn't immediately locate the airport, and found it with only about 15 minutes of altitude left. The landing speed was way too high and they had only emergency braking, so the wheels locked up and all tires blew after only 410 feet. It broke the plane, people were injured, but at least it was minor. There's a 45 minute video/TV show here on YT. Definitely worth a watch.

Again and again we see flight crew interpreting negative data as 'false warnings" or system malfunctions. As a layman, I can only read this one way, that flight crews are regularly bombarded with false warnings and thus become anaesthetised to them, or it's simply rank stupidity. If the dash on your car tells you that your engine is overheating, your 1st reaction isn't - "oh crap, another false alarm". I don't know, I'm not a pilot, though my step-son is. But even he is loath to discuss his work openly. Sad, but I think full auto is but one or two bad (perhaps terrorist/suicide) incidents away, and then the whole piloting community will regret being such a closed-shop.
Vivek Manoj (5 months ago)
Very nicely done, but you shouldn't put sad music over something like this that didn't result in any tragedies.

This was pretty astonishing and an amazing job by the pilots. The passengers had to be a mess as that classic jet engine sound disappeared all together. Another nice production. It would be great if you could include more actual dialogue between the pilots and ATC. Thanks.
Janco van der Westhuizen (5 months ago)
Sooo the Air Transat maintenance staff were not only unable to provide any assistance whatsoever, they're also the ones who caused the accident in the first place
Elaine Blackhurst (7 days ago)
Z Z don’t forget it was a mixed blessing being no fuel as the plane landed doing 300 miles an hour they said at the time and every tyre burst.there was arcing and flame which could have set of a huge fireball and all may not have got out in time This pilot had one chance do or die or ditch into the Atlantic and die. Even before moving the fuel from one tank to another he knew I’m not going to have enough fuel to go far it was a miracle the Azores were ahead and he had the gliding skills from the past and nerves of steel plus He never got anyone by phone that knew the plane to give him advice in the emergency That pilot flew for a further 15 years weekly commercially never had another accident don’t be too harsh and over 300 people alive from the Transat plane. To me he is a hero .Nerves of steel and God by his side

Engineers are neither morally or legally responsible for PAX and crew after the plane begins taxi. Why would a grown man, 35,000 ft in the air, trust the word of a paid flunky on the ground for anything more important than betting tips? Pilots are their worst enemies. YOU - the pilot are in-charge. YOU decide. Don't try and second guess the commuter systems, the hydraulics, and the myriad of other engineering. If YOU don't feel safe then go the Hell home, or sit the bastard down at the nearest available runway. It's really, really simple, but amazing just how many pilots - when asked to make the real tough decisions - choose to make the really shitty choice.

the reason why the left engines flames out because the a330 is designed for a 4hour flight or less depending on weight, balance, altitude and airspeed and etc for those who did'nt know just reply if im wrong im ten years old
TexasRose50 (5 months ago)
Do we know what happens to the maintenance crew when they are found to be at fault? Just wondering.
big ron (5 months ago)
That was awesome I can't believe they tried to pass the buck onto the pilots, they where hero's!!
Can readings or alarms can be a glitch? Or is it always true? Why pilots make decisions if theres a problem, if theres a procedure to follow? Sry for bad english.

whats up with canadian airlines running out of fuel lol
pedrosura (6 months ago)
Great video. I don't buy that they didn't have an indication of a fuel leak. The fuel totalizer and indication of fuel at destination should have been diverging progressively. This can be compared to the flight plan, and you should see a divergence of fuel quantity at every fix as the flight progresses. The totalizer would not show fuel being leaked but the fuel at destination would. That discrepancy is the leak. Boeing checklists on widebodies have now a section on fuel leak detection before opening any cross feeds.

Karen Dixon (7 months ago)
Are you sure this was the longest unpowered glide and safe landing by a passenger jet? There was another in the mid-90s from Orlando to Cancun I think. They suddenly lost their computer system.. could not navigate and engines stopped. The pilot requested to ditch in ocean but was told to keep ascending only slightly...it was something like 3hrs before they saw land because they were turned off course. Maybe you could cover that harrowing experience. I was living in Orlando at the time and a couple that was on that flight lived only blocks from us. (Of course you don't cover the passenger drama when engines go silent....which was their side of the story.) Thank you for all your work. This is the best coverage of these situations.👍
