Canon EOS R has some great features, but is mostly an overpriced letdown. And so continues Canon's trend of making underwhelming cameras for consumers, as well as way too powerfully amazing cameras that no one can afford. Their dynamic range business model is too high, and that is what today's video is about.
We will also discuss the new wide angle lens rumours for the RF mount system. 14-21 f1.4L, 16-35mm f2.8L and 12-20mm f2. My goodness.

CC!!! I just saw a very interesting video by Gerald Undone. I know it is not an excuse for the Sony A7 III, but there is a workaround to make face tracking work in 4K. (1080p works without a problem at all) The catch is that you have to use an external recorder and need to disable internal recordimg on the camera. That adds another couple off hundreds of dollars to your bill, but it works. https://youtu.be/2BY0T_UY06U
I did not like that combination of Sony and Sigma you filmed on. Creamy creamy background, but not enough depth of field to fit your face in and the tracking honestly wasn't very smooth. I prefer your panasonic set up. keep making the videos - you're a funny guy. I watch them and I'm not even in the market for a new camera. Come to that,,,,,,,, what are you gonna do if you find your perfect camera? I guess that's not really such a problem - you can just keep chatting about the new stuff coming out in the search for your new perfect camera. What am I thinking - there is no perfect camera!.
I just talked to a Canon rep at a photo expo. Canon aren't telling their people ANYTHING. But the rep does not expect the next R, or any future releases, to have IBIS. (All together now: BOOOOOO) He also doesn't expect a new body within the next year. So we have the choice of buying the R just to get those primo lenses, or to wait. I'm gonna wait.
Just recently picked up
I think Panasonic will change to the flip screen after all 🤓
From 43 rumors: “Live Streaming capability
Variable ND Adaptor that will work with Panasonic Sigma and Leica lenses
Stronger and more robust Fully articulating Touchscreen
Internal 4K Raw in 24/25
More details to follow.”
I just realized cameras are like video game consoles and some buy a weaker consoler beacause of the better exclusives, which are like native lenses. Eos r is like nintendo switch and the 28-70 f2 is like zelda botw or mario odyssey
I think you used your cell phone and had a monkey track your face using an iPad 2 whilest whilsting ( <-that is a verb) the time away.
In all seriousness, I watched 5 videos today, yours was the only one I watched through the end! Keep it up, you're going places… like to Mars... and more Autotune!!!
See if I got this right. So upon returning Eddie's equipment that he so graciously let you borrow, he noticed it all smelled like beef coffee and felt a little greasy. Hence why you're vlogging from his living room- he will no longer let you off the premises with any of his shit. Tried to get his scooter impounded too. didn't you?
agreed. They'll release something better than the R......but it'll cost like 4500. The A9 is not within normal people range. I'd say something around 3000 COULD still be doable for a "normal" person......but anything above that it......it's like Leica.......pointlessly expensive.
Ah that's why the AF wasn't as good.....Sigma lens.
I just want the A7000 with a native 1.4 APSC lens.
I would guess some Sony camera, due to the yellow background. The more I look at the EOS R though, the less I want it. It's too expensive for what it offers, since I'm only an enthusiast shooting stills. Even though I'm invested in Canon and have a bunch of lenses, it's cheaper to jump ship.
If you buy it, make sure to get a Sigma lens. That way you'll get bigger biceps while vlogging.
I think you should revisit why you got a m4/3 G85 over an APS-C or FF in the first place.
Weight and size of a body+lens would have been a deciding factor when making that decision as a travel vlogger? Maybe a manual focus 50mm f0.95 lens wasn't the best choice (maybe something with an AF/MF mode that you could use to set and check focus on your phone out of frame), but as your last few videos show there's a lot of options out there for m4/3 and even more you may not be aware of.
Perhaps have a look into the CM-AEF-MFT or EF-M2 speedboosters. They can be had for around $100USD and will let you use any Canon EF lens on the G85 with autofocus, EXIF data and stabilisation! There's a lot of cheap Canon primes and kit lenses with IS in them that go really wide when the 0.71x speedbooster is factored in. Of course you get some of that delicious canon colour science to go along with the exceptional video modes and quality of that tiny baby.. arm sensor in the G85.
I honestly think that you have been consumed by the stats and specs of the FF mirrorless cameras on the market and have set your mind on something that may actually not be that beneficial to you, and will cost you a lot of cash.
+Camera Conspiracies ALL the same features of the G85 with a wider lens and good auto focus - did you just give away what camera you trying to make us guess? I still have no clue.. will leave that to those who know more than me.
The comparison video you did between the FF Sony 50mm vs m43 25mm was particularly interesting to me, especially how there were some differences between FOV and bluriness. Did you ever figure out why there are those differences?
Thanks heaps for the reply mate, keep up the interesting videos. If you haven't already gone south to BKK and checked out the upper levels of Pantip Plaza, then might be worth checking out next time you're on the move around there - they have some insanely cool camera gear, almost like they belong in a museum level shit and you might be like a fat kid in a candy store, only skinny, not fat and the candy will be expensive lenses.
My needs have changed, that's all. I got the G85 knowing it couldn't auto focus well, and I was fine with using manual focus. I just wanted a professional look with some shallow depth of field and it suited me well for years but now it's a pain in the ass to set up lol. I want all the same features of the G85 with a wider lens and good auto focus ;)
Hey Tony! Nice to see you here 😊 I don't think there is a flippy screen. He loooooves peaking on the flippy screen. But he hasn't done it once in this vid. And the blurry background indicates full frame. But I don't think it's 50mm, maybe a bit less, like a 35mm F1.4-ish. So most likely a Sony. And he did play around with an A9 not too long ago. And I think the A9 belongs to the misterious dude in the background :-P
You're funny.. but you take IBIS way way too seriously... Other than couple of cameras, none of the implementation of IRIS is good especially with a wide angel lens (e.g A7III). I am sure you have looked at EOS R vs other cameras stabilization tests on the internet and I didn't found a single one where EOS R was that much worse where it is unusable.. Youtubers are buying it over many cameras for some or the other reason.. Photography was /is/ will never be that much gear dependent. Although I get your point your requirements... A camera for you should be out soon
You prbably already know these but maybe you should check out potato jet's video comparing the a7iii and the eos r... Or this video: https://youtu.be/jL7YojU2LFE that might help you too... Plus I hope that Peter Greg does a video on his sharpening procedure of the camera. And then there will not be much of a difference. But apparently the video gets soft every time you activate the electronic stabilisation. Cheers.
An EF not focusing natively? Are you kidding? The R system have more connections and a faster rate of transfer, but that adjust just fine for the older lenses that will focus as usual. An EF adapted lens is native in behavior as long as there is dual pixel focusing. But yes, I understand if you just want an R lens.
The R seems like a placeholder to me. The lenses are amazing but they're likely just releasing the initial R to have something to put them on while they work on a better camera. At least that's what I'm hoping is going on.
For some reason I knew it had to be either the Sony a7riii or the Sony A9. The A9 was my first guess. I knew it was Sony because I saw your friend in the background that owns both those cameras hahaha.
The face tracking also works on the Sony A7R II and A7S II, while connected by Wifi to a mobile device. They don't just show the "tracking box" on the remote App. But that is only when recording 1080p.
Hi Kasey - great video as usual, thumbs up :) Here is the "rules" on face detection for the Sony's. In 1080 recording mode, you get full face detection autofocus no matter what (unless you turn it off yourself lol). In 4K you get face detection autofocus ONLY when there is NO connection to the HDMI port and when the wifi is not turned on. You cannot even have an empty connected-to-nothing HDMI cable plugged into the HDMI port without face detection autofocus being turned off.
By using an HDMI connection (of any type, includes monitor OR recording device) your face detection turns off. Plain and simple. However your autofocus does NOT turn off. The camera continues to focus by it's normal detection mode, but not face detection - meaning the autofocus does not turn off just cause you use wifi or plug a plug into the HDMI port, the camera just steps down to a lower version of auto focus.
There is no way around this, people can swear till they are blue in the face :) Anyone that says otherwise, needs to make a video showing the LCD screen with 4K on and a white face detect box operational around a human face following it around the LCD screen. Just won't happen, it's in the manual and it is true in real life. This includes the A7 III, the A7R III, and yes the A9 :)
So, A9 A73 A7R3, use wifi or plug ANYTHING into the HDMI port while in 4K mode and your auto focus steps down to regular autofocus mode only.
In 1080, you can use anything anywhere and it will work with the highest form of autofocus which is face-detection.
I am hoping the A7S III that Sony seems to holding back might have the processing power to do both HDMI/WIFI and face detection. The A7 III already has great low light, the A7S III needs articulating screen, 60P 4K, working HDMI output for 60p with face detection, and better developed slow motion. The IBIS also needs to up it's game.
The closest camera to meet what people are looking for is the Z6.
My 2 cents :)
That would be big news Kasey if the A9 indeed recorded in 4K with the face detection working :) I may have to get that camera in here again to test it out to see, let me know if you do. Did you get my email?
